Any device which exceeds the UPS's VA/Watt rating should not be plugged into the outlets. Besides, high current drawing devices, medical equipment is also not recommended for ordinary UPS models.

Below are the typical devices that we believe you should not plug into the "Battery and Surge" outlets of the UPS.

Longer runtime can be achieved by installing additional battery packs or strings of batteries if the UPS has extended battery cabinet capabilities.

Yes. Generally greater loads yield shorter runtimes. However, there are still some other critical factors that can affect runtimes:

Load Type (power draining type) - Inductive loads like motors require high starting current and can drain more than resistive loads (such as lamp). Furthermore, most of the time we only consider the rating power consumption of the load. One server can consume more power than another identical server if it is frequently under heavy duty service.

Battery Condition - Every single battery is in different condition. Of course batteries with better conditions can last longer.

Operating Environment - The performance of the battery can vary dramatically under extreme temperature and humidity.

Smaller UPS units such as < 1500VA units can utilise a standard 10A GPO outlet. So they could be installed quite easily, plug and play.

No, you don't have to. All UPS's are equipped with "Auto Recharge" feature. The UPS will charge the internal battery as long as the input power source is available (no matter the UPS is turned on or turned off).

A UPS provides essential surge protection, however, additional surge protection is suggested to use in conjunction with all UPS units. A good quality surge device will prevent up to 15x significant surges, one of the leading causes of hardware failure. The surge protection device does not eliminate UPS issues altogether, but will prevent incoming power surges destroying expensive electrical infrastructure.

UPS Systems require replacement after they reach the end of their reasonable life expectancy of 4 - 6 years, some lower spec models require replacement sooner. After this period the internal components such as the inverter, fans, capacitors, battery charge and intelligence module no longer provide a reliable source of protection, if they are not replaced we risk potential downtime and damage to our critical equipment.
